Highly detailed water street scenes produced by a Chinese silk embroidery Master Craftswoman.

The picture depicts a classical scene from Suzhou, the home of Su silk embroidery.

The Master Craftswoman of the Gu family, has gained her expertise in Su embroidery from her family who has been in the trade for many generations.

The artisans dye the silk threads in the workshop, before selecting the threads and silk fabric for the particular picture to be made. The design is sketched onto the silk fabric which is stretched over a wooden frame before the work is started.

Random, flat and cross stitch in combination with different tread thicknesses and stitch densities  are used to build up layers of thread to produce the interplay of shadows and highlights to bring the pictures to life.

The Gu family displays their award winning embroidery in galleries both in mainland China and Hong Kong.
